We are seeking a research partnership between Malaysia and UK researchers (1 UK and 1 Malaysian research team or individual to research respective countries) to scope, understand and capture indigenous knowledge, practices, and ways of working that could address climate adaptation. 

About this opportunity 

The British Council has launched a new global programme called Culture Responds to Global Challenges. It’s climate change strand aims to enable artists to tell the climate change story and improve practices in cultural organisations.

In Malaysia the British Council will run Human-Nature: a 3-year programme of collaborations and partnerships between the UK and Malaysia Civil Society Organisations and arts sectors, to explore Malaysia’s cultural diversity and biodiversity, and develop creative responses to climate adaptation. The research findings will be utilised to inform Human-Nature, for the development of sustainable creative collaboration pathways and activities between Malaysia and the UK specifically a delegation of UK sector experts to Malaysia and a creative commission in 2024. 

Scope of this research

  • Malaysia-based research - Scope and explore Indigenous knowledge, practices and ways of working that could address climate adaptation in an inclusive and participatory way. Support British Council, UK, and Malaysia stakeholders to understand how Malaysian traditional Indigenous knowledge can contribute to alternative solutions to climate adaptation and map the creative collaboration pathways between Malaysia and the UK to provide creative responses to climate adaptation.
  • UK-based research - Map current trends, initiatives, and potential stakeholders who are working at the intersection of arts, science, technology and who could collaborate internationally on creative responses to climate adaptation with Malaysian stakeholders

Please note this is a call for a research partnership and proposals should be a joint application between Malaysian and UK research individuals or teams.
