The British Council Malaysia hosted student delegates of UK Malaysia University Consortium Student Conference at our principal office on 20 July where the UK students engaged with British expats in Malaysia, and Malaysia university students interacted with staff on the work we do in Malaysia to foster peace and prosperity.
Students from the UK universities met several Brits in Malaysia to understand the challenges and opportunities of working and living in Malaysia. A panel discussion was moderated by Director Malaysia, Jazreel Goh with panellists from British High Commission (Tom Shepherd, Political Counsellor), UK business (Martin R Haeger MBE, Director of HL Architecture Sdn Bhd) and UK university (Prof Sarah Metcalfe, Interim Provost and CEO of University of Nottingham Malaysia).
As for students from the Malaysia univerisities, they learned about post-graduate options in the UK and the post-graduate pathways through UK alumni sharing. Our Alumni UK member, Ooi Suan Kim, who is a Barrister, Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya shared her experience studying in the UK, and the career decisions she made upon her return to Malaysia.
There were 83 students (39 UK students and 44 MY students) participate in the student conference from 17 to 21 July. The inaugural Student Conference Week was initiated by the UK Malaysia Universities Consortium, established under the partnership with the British Council Malaysia and Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education. The theme of this student conference is on Intercultural Perspectives on Sustainable Development and Equality in Higher Education. The week-long Student Conference was hosted by Universiti Malaya in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
