History was first made back in 2016 with Professor Dr Abhi Veerakumarasivam’s win, cementing him as the first Malaysian and Asian to have won the FameLab International competition.

Within a span of three years, history repeated itself with Dr Siti Khayriyyah successfully reclaiming the FameLab International Champion title this year in 2018.

Since FameLab’s first debut in 2008, Malaysia is the only country that has won twice and produced a pair of International Champions throughout the eleven years of the competition.

Malaysia first participated in FameLab International in 2015.

First FameLab International Champion from Asia

Professor Dr Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam from Malaysia was crowned the best science communicator for FameLab International 2016.

Abhi’s battle against over 2000 scientists from 27 countries ended in victory after a skilfully crafted presentation on “Cancer Genetics” at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival on 9 June. Aida Rafat from Qatar and Alba Aguion from Spain came a close second, sharing the runner-up title.

Second FameLab International Champion from Asia

Dr Siti Khayriyyah Mohd Hanafiah, a Biological Science lecturer from Universiti Sains Malaysia, was crowned the 2018 FameLab International Champion at the Cheltenham Science Festival on 7 June.

Her winning talk, “To Find a Hidden Killer”, focused on tuberculosis control and she convinced the judges through her calm engaging presence on stage, fine story telling skills and clarity of content.

Having competed against other national winners from 27 countries, Khayriyyah is the second Malaysian FameLab International Champion after Professor Dr Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam, who won the title in 2016.
