What is the European Day of Languages (EDL)?

A day to encourage language learning across Europe. At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September - together with the European Commission.

Why do we celebrate the EDL?

  • To build awareness on the importance of language learning to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding.
  • To promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe.
  • To encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school.
