If you are a 21 years old and above, studying or working in science, engineering, technology, medicine or mathematics, you are the candidates that we are seeking. 

FameLab Malaysia is trying to find people who want to talk about their science, not the people who have already shifted into science communication or promotion as a full-time career.

The competition is made up of 3 stages: 

Stage 1 – Upon successful application, entrants will start their FameLab journey taking part in the Regional Heats.

Stage 2 – Ten regional finalists will be selected from the Regional Heats and they will move on to participate in a mandatory FameLab Masterclass and the Malaysia National Final in Kuala Lumpur.

Stage 3 - The winner of the national competition will then move on to compete against 25+ other international finalists for the title of FameLab International Champion at Cheltenham Science Festival in June.

Regional heats

You will be required to attend the Regional Heats to enter the final stage. Please make yourself available on the following dates for the Regional Heats. 

Upon successful application, you will be contacted and informed on the locations and dates for Regional Heats.

The participating locations and dates for 2019 Regional Heats includes:

9 February 2019  : Northern Heat (Penang)
16 February 2019: Southern Heat (Johor)
23 February 2019: Sabah and Sarawak Heat (Sabah) 
2 March 2019      : Central Heat (Kuala Lumpur) 

Important Dates

March 2019      : FameLab Masterclass
April 2019         : FameLab Malaysia Final
4 - 9 June 2019: FameLab International

Prizes

The overall national winner will win a cash prize of RM3,000 and attend the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK to compete in the FameLab International Final. 

FameLab MasterClass

The Masterclass is run by some of the best science communicators in the world. This is one of the biggest prizes for all FameLab finalists. There you will learn why public engagement is important, develop invaluable media and presentation skills, and get the opportunity to network with scientists from many different scientific fields!

Eligibility and Rules

Before you apply please make sure you are eligible to take part in this competition and understand the rules that apply to the competition!

On the application form, you’ll be asked to provide a link to a three minute video of you, pitching the research topic you think is the most compelling. Videos will need to be uploaded to YouTube or a similar service. 

The video must meet the following criteria:

  • Up to three minutes long on any science, engineering, technology, medicine or mathematics related areas
  • You cannot use a PowerPoint, other electronic presentation or audio recording
  • No editing or special effects
  • No other people or excessive props (you can only use the props that you can carry onto stage yourself)
  • No background music (unless that is what you are talking about!)
  • Recording quality will not be assessed but remember that the clearer you make it, the better we can judge it!
