Hailed by Vogue as one of the biggest new music talents in the UK, highly acclaimed sarod player Soumik Datta and Austrian drummer Bernhard Schimplesberger presented their audio - visual performance piece ‘Circle of Sound’ to audiences in Malaysia last year.
Performed at the Georgetown Festival, Black Box MAP @ Publika and Urbanscapes 2012, this cross-arts production with live music, spoken word and film brought together the worlds of music and contemporary theatre to take audiences on a journey of discovery through India and Europe.
Trained by the legendary Pt. Buddhadev DasGupta, Soumik the ‘British Sarod maestro’ has played internationally and collaborated with Talvin Singh, Akram Khan, Nitin Sawhney, Bill Bailey, Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles.
Joining Soumik is Bernhard (aka Taalis), an Austrian-born percussionist who plays the western drum kit like a tabla virtuoso, blending Indian and Western rhythms into a unique drumming style. He studied with tabla master Pt. Surest Talwalkar and percussion legend Trilok Gurtu, and has collaborated with Talvin Singh, Akram Khan and Shusheela Raman.
