British Council

The British Council in Malaysia is happy to offer a special IELTS scholarship to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to take the IELTS exam in order to apply for university, for emigration purposes, or simply to advance their careers.

What’s on offer?

If you win the scholarship, you will gain access to our 72-hour Online IELTS Preparation course as well as receive a free IELTS test.

Who can apply for the scholarship?

The scholarship is offered to anyone currently residing in Malaysia, who is 16 years old or older (anyone under the age of 18 will need permission from a parent or guardian to apply) and who identifies as a person with a disability.

What kind of course is it?

The course consists of 48 lessons (each 90 minutes long) focused around four IELTS Academic modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Fully delivered online, each class is taught by a British Council teacher while the students come from various countries in Asia. As a student, you can choose when you take the lessons and in which order. Currently, the lessons are offered throughout the week in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. More information about the course can be found here.

What kind of special arrangements can be made for me during the course?

Our Online IELTS Preparation course is delivered via Zoom. The teachers present information in visual form on a PowerPoint and play audio tracks for some exercises. Students are expected to take an active part in the lessons by speaking and writing throughout the lesson (lessons are not lectures). We are currently unprepared to provide special arrangements for students with the type of disability that would prevent them from being able to take an active part in the course, e.g., severe visual or aural impairment. We will be happy, however, to provide materials with enlarged font, send materials ahead of the lesson or switch on closed captioning on Zoom. We will be happy to work with the individual student to see how we can accommodate to any special needs.

What about the IELTS exam?

As part of this special scholarship, you will also receive a free IELTS exam. You may sit the test at any of our test centre locations in Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. Please note you may need to notify the team early if you require special arrangements, such as braille papers, extra time, amanuensis or enlarged print. Full information on special arrangements can be found here.
